90's Fashion Revisited

Smurfette - I need to see that Motorola phone pronto. I was watching the Usual Suspects the other night and noticed that Dean...Big Brother Almight-ty! had the same phone!

That movie is dope, by the way. I knew it was the cripple.

Hey! Do my eyes deceive me or did I just see a comment from TheKidd!?

Welcome back!

Well, well, well. I think I remember those Wannabees. I even had a pair with my name airbrushed on the sides. I was so corny back then.

But Manny, I had a pair of fake Nike Air Huaraches. I got them from Fayva which, if you remember, was the equivilant of Payless. Needless to say, I was the joke of the day at my school. Much to my mom's chagrin, I only wore them once. Good thing they were only $9.99!

I've always wanted a pair of the orange and blue Patrick Ewings. But, the problem with those sneakers is that it's hard to find clothes that match the sneakers. I know, just get a Knicks jersey right? Well, my mom couldn't afford things like that and apparently, neither could the kids moms that had the sneakers back then.

This one girl wore those sneakers with EVERYTHING! I mean, her mom would send her to school with a pink sweatsuit on and she'd still rock the Patrick Ewings. Poor girl.

You shoulda knew I'd be back like I forgot something!!! You should be happy that you got your sneakers from an actual shoe store. My parents used to come home from Pathmark w/ ALL PATHMARK BAGS and say "We got you some sneakers in one of those bags". I never quite understood why a supermarket would need to sell sneakers but I guess it was for people like my parents. I used to hate cutting that plastic that held them together. They didn't even come in a box!!!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA How are you gonna talk about how poor I was?!!? We all went through hard times. It just so happens my sneakers were right next to the No Frills aisle. Do you remember that aisle in Pathmark?!?! I actually had to do a talent show @ the Klein Memorial wearing some Filas that were supposed to look like Air Force Ones. Maybe I shouldn't have said that because I was kinda old to still be wearing Supermarket sneakers. Nevermind that last comment.

Remember the Deon Sanders sneakers? Aw man, those were the bomb!

But, back to you being poor. Did you ever toast bread and sprinkle sugar on it?

Wait. I gotta write a post about this- I'll be right back....

I never did the toast and sugar thing. What we DID do though was toast bagels (I have no idea why we had bagels as poor as we were) and either put salt or American Cheese on it. The salt made it taste like a pretzel and the cheese made it taste KINDA like pizza. I don't want to say we were POOR...we were just resourceful. Me and my 3 sisters would each get a quarter and we'd go to the store. One person would get Bravos (fake Doritos), one would get Onion Rings, one would get Cheese Doodles, and one would get popcorn. We'd call it a party. It's funny because we'd be sitting in the house and be like "Wanna have a party?" and we all knew what that meant. Years later, I walk into the store and what do I see...PARTY MIX!!! I felt wronged.

Oh fo' sure, I remember Fayva, that's where I bought my 5th grade prom shoes for...you guessed it...$9.99! But I couldn't rock the bootleg Huaraches...but I'm not saying I didn't have my share of rejects in the earlier kiddie days! I know you remember Alexander's, Sunshine, right? Well I had me a pair of USA 900's, straight off the table where a bunch of sneakers were piled up on top of each other, and them things lasted a whole 4 hours before they got tore up during the 2nd grade lunchbreak days at P.S. 397, playing dodgeball! So Nike, became the primary (or the sneakers I begged for each time from my parents) choice for the next couple of decades.
But you said it best...get a Knicks jersey, that's what I did (or already had for years, my Ewing and Starks throwbacks). You know what's a funny story...the 1st Kane concert I went to, in 2004 at this club called Southpaw here in Brooklyn, I was rocking my throwback Ewing jersey w/ my orange/blue Ewing's, tell my why your man was rocking the throwback Willis Reed Jersey w/ the Ewing's on (I believe he was wearing those kicks, you can ask him, lol) during his performance?!
Man I was buggin' I was like, this gotta be a BK/NY thang!
Poor girl, somebody shoulda told her to get the ol' Michael Jackson British Knights, to match her pink outfits or something, but hey, at least she represented for the BIG FELLA, P. EWING ;-)
